Preppin’ for Paleo

Preparation is key to success, especially during the Paleo Challenge. For those that are having trouble getting away from your normal eating habits this blog is intended to keep you on track every step of the way.

1) Rid your fridge and cabinets of all non-paleo items. That old cottage cheese and chocolate chip cookies have got to go.

2) Look at grocery fliers. Stock up on sale items for the week. Veggies, fruits, lean proteins and good fats. This saves money and helps vary the food items on a weekly basis.

3) Restock your fridge and cabinets with all those good paleo foods. Now when youre hungry or putting together dinner you have all great foods readily available.

Preparing is the first step, and the most essential. Other topics of this page will include preparing meals for the day/week, how to make good decisions when dining out, Paleo ways to flavor foods and many many more. Stay tuned!

Identifying and conquering obstacles

There are a ton of challenges that present themselves when trying to live a healthy life style. If we can plan for these obstacles a head of time, we can find a solution to almost anything that comes our way.

For example,

“I travel a lot on Wednesdays and it’s hard for me to get a healthy meal on the road”

Solution: Fill a cooler with an ice pack, a small grilled chicken salad w/dressing container, a plum, a packet of almonds. This way good food is always available when you need it.

I order out on Thursdays because I get home from work late”

Solution: Marinate your meat the day before, chop of veggies for a stir fry or toss up a salad with lots of extras a head of time. Come home, pre-heat the oven while you change. Quickly steam the prepared veggies. Eat and relax.

“I’m going out to eat with friends Saturday night, chalk that up to a cheat day”

Solution: Use the menu as a reference but don’t be afraid to have them replace unfavorable carbs with more favorable choices. If your dinner guests make fun, show them your new 6 pack or better yet..Clean & Jerk them across the room.

The tough part about adhering to a Paleo lifestyle is giving up the foods we’ve grown to love. Although pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, and french fries were never a staple in my diet I did find myself craving these types of foods intermittently. I came across these recipes along the way and decided they were easy to prepare, just as tasty and way healthier…

Cauliflower mashed potatoes

Cauliflower rice

Spaghetti Squash

Sweet Potato Fries

Just like in CrossFit we can scale anything. No food processor? Mash it up with a fork. No Coconut oil? Use olive oil. Substitute any spices you’d like. Consider putting your shrimp stir fry over a bed of cauliflower rice, sirloin steak next to carrots and cauliflower mashed potatoes, chicken broccoli spaghetti squash with an olive oil/garlic sauce, or some sweet potato fries next to your eggs in the morning.
